That lazy Saturday morning mood...
The Barberini Faun is arguably one of the most famous — and controversial — statues from antiquity. The statue was found in the 1620s in the moat below the Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, when work on the fortification was undertaken by the Barberini Pope Urban VIII. It was purchased by Ludwig, Crown Prince of Bavaria, in 1827 and a special room was designed for it in his new museum, the Glyptothek, by the architect Leo von Klenze. The building was heavily damaged during WWII (the sculptures were safely hidden) and after the war the architect of the restoration decided to reconstruct the Glyptothek without the original wall painted murals or decoration. This monochromatic palette continues the myth that Hellenistic Greece and imperial Rome were whitewashed, when in fact both buildings and statuaries were highly chromatic. This revisionist history is currently on view at the Met in NYC, in an exhibition entitled “Chroma.”
