The Nenets are an Indigenous people living in the north of Siberia. Their culture and nomadic way of life are inseparable from the reindeer, itself a favorite symbol of this time of the year. I was photographing them in 2011. Global warming has become a serious threat to this people, not least because their migration with reindeer herds is dependent on the seasons and the routes they traditionally take inside the Arctic Circle. The median temperature in Siberia has increased two to three times more than the global average, reaching unprecedented levels, such as the 38°C recorded in June this year. With ice melting starting earlier in the spring and lasting later into the autumn, the Nenets have been forced to alter their aged-old migratory routes since the reindeer struggle to walk on tundra that has lost its snow. Rising temperatures are also affecting the vegetation on the tundra, the only food source of the reindeer. We can only hope that 2022 will bring us more encouraging news about climate change since it is already having devastating effects on the planet and its inhabitants. Photo 2: Crossing the River Ob is a great adventure. We left at 7 a.m. and when we stopped fifteen hours later, we had traveled 52 kilometers. Photo 3: When the temperature drops and a fierce wind blows, the Nenets take refuge in their tents until they can resume their migration. #nenets #siberia #sibérie #russia #russie #yamalpeninsula #péninsuledeyamal #penínsulayamal #photography #photographie #fotografia #sebastiaosalgado #globalwarming #rechauffementclimatique #aquecimentoglobal #climatechange #mudançaclimática #changementclimatique #rennes #renas #reindeers #genesis
