There are some people in this life you can’t help but love so deeply, so fiercely. Sometimes, though, those people are not meant for you to love them. Sometimes, these people are unworthy of you. Someone who takes advantage of your kindness, who never gives you the space to say when your feelings are battered, who assumes you will always be there for them, who makes you feel small—these people are not meant for you to love. These people often expect and are unappreciative of all that you give—and that’s why you have to let them go. There will be a moment when you realize the way you’ve been mistreated. You will feel sorry for yourself for not asking yourself, Is this what I want? You will feel ashamed for letting yourself accept anything less than you deserved— but you have to forgive yourself. Forgive yourself for getting so lost in it, for abandoning yourself for as long as you did. You will feel angry, too. You will want revenge in some way—and you might even want them to feel as mad the way you do. But you can’t fight fire with fire. You fight by walking away. You fight for yourself by walking away. It’s easier said than done, but one day, you will think about them less and less. One day, they will be irrelevant and you will feel indifferent toward them. One day, you will feel solace. 🤍 words are from my next book, ‘Loving, Longing, and Other Liminal Spaces’
