Over the past 4 years I have had the opportunity to work with countless talented and incredible Black artist, and I am forever grateful and honored to work with each one them. Last weekend was the opening of my latest curatorial project “Call us who we left behind.” The opening was truly special and the gallery was filled with so many Black people I almost forgot I was still in Phoenix. Living in the southwest as a Black creative is a constant struggle of feeling isolated or underrepresented. When I first started curating exhibitions at Modified 4 years ago, I wanted to make it my mission to have a space where artist of color could see themselves represented-when I first moved here I hardly saw spaces like that. I’ve been able to build this community for myself and so many others who also feel the harsh reality of being a Black person out here. With Black History month closing out, I just wanted to highlight some of my curatorial projects I hold close to my heart and felt formative to my own personal growth as an artist and person. I wouldn’t be who I am today without this community of artists. 🤎 Portrait by @shaunte
