Iris Van Herpen invited me to collaborate on the design of her new collection, inspiring haute couture through the visual echoes of dance. I joined her in Amsterdam to film @nationaleoperaballet dancer Yuanyuan Zhang using chronophotography, echoing her motions into complex patterns across time. In the months that followed, hundreds of images emerged, which Iris and her atelier developed into several new pieces for the ‘Meta Morphism’ collection. The finale gown pictured here, which debuted in Paris in July, is inspired by the radial geometry borne of Yuanyuan’s improvised movement. I’ve never worked with a more skilled, seamlessly collaborative group of people. Thanks to Eloi Maduell for developing the software which made live monitoring of the echoes possible, to Thom Schrama for bringing his brilliant eye and mind to a technically unprecedented shoot, to Yuanyuan for her patience and perfect form throughout the day, and thank you to Iris and her team, whose warmth and creative agility led to these incredible designs.
