According to child development literature, between 6 and 12 months, your baby will likely begin to resist lying on their back during nappy changes. If this sounds familiar, it may be time to consider another approach: standing nappy changes. 💜 For ease of clean-up, do standing changes in the bathroom. This will also help your child begin to associate nappy changes with potty learning and using a toilet. Store nappies and wipes within easy reach. 💙 Provide your baby with a stable place to balance. The edge of a bathtub is the perfect height for little ones to hold onto. They can also use the toilet with the lid closed or a securely mounted bar on the wall for support. 💚 Your child may be more cooperative if they have some control over the process. You can ask them to pull wipes from the container and choose their next nappy. 💛 Talk them through what’s happening, asking permission as appropriate, with words like: “Your nappy is dirty; it’s time to change it. May I pull down your trousers?” They may not have the language to communicate their consent yet, but making it a habit to ask first shows that you respect their autonomy. 🧡 Teach your baby to squat while you clean their bottom, or if the mess requires a more thorough cleaning, help them lift one leg at a time. You can also reserve standing changes for nappies that contain only wee. ❤️ To complete the process, the two of you can wash your hands together. #LoveveryEurope #ParentingTips
