The Wharton Esherick House and Studio, 1926-66
.
If there’s a godfather to 20th century American Craft, it would be Wharton Esherick. His handcrafted furniture is hard to find and is much coveted, but his masterpiece has always been his house and studio in Malvern, Pennsylvania — an hour outside of Philadelphia. Here he honed his philosophy in wood that influenced everyone from George Nakashima to Wendell Castle and JB Blunk and the wood artists of today. The house and studio evolved with Esherick’s work through the decades — from his Arts & Crafts beginnings to the German Expressionism of the 1920s and ‘30s and the organic forms of the ‘40s and ‘50s. Each movement left an imprint onto his house and studio, which includes a wood shop addition designed in concert with the architect Louis Kahn (last image). The results are nothing less than the history of art and craft in the 20th century.
