Exécutée en 1946, “Océanie la mer” est une grande tenture murale en lin sérigraphié. Cette œuvre et son pendant “Océanie le ciel”, ont pour origine les souvenirs du voyage à Tahiti d’Henri Matisse en 1930. Exécutées d’après des maquettes en papier découpé, ces pièces marquent un tournant décisif dans le travail de l’artiste qui inaugure à cette époque les séries de papiers découpés qui vont caractériser la dernière partie de son œuvre jusqu’à sa disparition en 1954. Durant cette même période entre 1943 et 47, l’artiste élabore le livre illustré Jazz pour l’éditeur Tériade, basé sur des papiers découpés. Mais c’est avec les deux panneaux Océanie que l’artiste donne au geste toute sa dimension, dès lors il va concevoir des compositions monumentales dont la plupart se réfèrent à ses souvenirs polynésiens.
