Water is quite simply the most precious fluid on earth, vital to our very existence. Global warming has become a threat to humanity and to nature. As a result of mounting temperatures, the melting of glaciers and the warming of the oceans have raised sea-levels, with devastating impact on coastal populations and the environment. Our ability to coexist with water, both to use it and protect it, has become more critical than ever to our survival and to the preservation of biodiversity across the globe. Today, on World Water Day, we celebrate this element so essential to human beings and the planet. From April 1st, we will exhibit 42 images around the theme of water, in a bamboo pavilion specially built for the occasion, on the esplanade of La Défense, in Paris. © Sebastião Salgado 1 - The Victoria Falls, recognized by Unesco as a world heritage site, is one of the most spectacular sights in the world. Viewed here from Zambia, the water falls 108 metres across the 1.7 km width of a geological fault. Zambia, 2008. 2 - The laundry workers of Mahalaxmi Dhobigat, mostly migrants from the state of Uttar Pradesh, wash clothes for private families. Dependent for survival on water, it is capable of digging to a depth of one metre in order to reach underground water.
