Suicide is a global health crisis. In the United States alone, there were an estimated 1.2 million suicide attempts in 2020 (the last year for which data is available), and it is the 12th leading cause of death in this country. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization. In 2020, a national three-digit number (the 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline) was created to provide free and confidential support 24 hours a day to anyone who may need it.
