Black rhinos usually favour the thickets, where it can be very difficult to get close enough for an intimate encounter. While rhinos have poor eyesight, they have an acute sense of smell and hearing. They can also be quite feisty. If you try to get close to them in a vehicle, they will often hear the approaching engine before you can get close and run for cover. If you try to approach on foot you must be downwind so they can’t catch your scent and you have to be very careful not to crunch vegetation underfoot; an uncertain black rhino will often charge at a perceived threat without hesitation or warning. On a couple of hair-raising occasions I have been forced to rapidly climb a tree after spooking a black rhino whilst on foot. . On this occasion, however, luck was with me when we found these rhinos out in the open. I was able to judge the direction they were heading and position myself well in front of them. I noticed the mother would often pause to browse on low acacia shrubs so I stopped near one that I hoped she would find appetising. I waited with bated breath as she approached, conscious not to make any noises or sudden movements that might spook her.
