More than 200,000 people in Somalia face the very real threat of famine as skyrocketing food prices compound four seasons of failed rains that have left 90% of the country in severe drought.
In Somalia, the deadly convergence of the climate crisis and a worsening global food catastrophe is costing lives today.
Somalia’s deepening hunger crisis is exacerbated by climate change and economic disruption wrought by COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, resulting in income loss and higher food prices. Families are finding it harder and harder to afford food and water due to income losses, high water, food and fuel prices, and continuing conflict.
Mercy Corps teams are working in some of the worst-affected districts, including Baidoa, Jubaland, and parts of Puntland and Southwest states, have warned that dwindling water and food supplies are now pushing families over the brink.
