Can you tell one black rhino from another? In order to manage rhino populations, we must know how many there are in a population. This is much easier to do when you can recognise each individual! To help, an internationally recognised ear notching system is used, allowing each individual to be given a unique identification number. Ear notches can only be applied when a rhino is immobilised but, once complete, it enables rangers to effectively record sightings. This information helps us to define home ranges; record relationships with other rhinos; track the age of the animal, and; in the case of females, record births.
