The crescendo of music, vocals, or noise that intensifies, making your heart rate rise as the story builds. A powerful soundscape is a huge part of any horror film.
During this past festival, @nikyatu, @tenerelle, @marsgee13, and Lisa Taouma joined our Horror & Sound panel, moderated by film composer and ethnomusicologist @sultana.isham, to discuss how filmmakers of color approached scoring in their films.
Nikyatu shares how she didn’t want to replicate the traditional American horror soundscape in her Sundance-winning feature NANNY (2022), instead she choose to highlight Sierra Leonean sounds like the kora, an instrument used in West Africa.
Watch the full panel as we head into spooky season, then listen to how sound is a key part of some of your favorite horror films. Link in the bio, or find it on our YouTube channel youtube.com/BlackStarProjects.
NANNY will have a limited theatrical release on November 23.
