There is currently a spectaclur show of Tropical Slipper Orchids (Phragmipedium) in the Potted Plants gallery.
The slipper-like pocket on the flower serves as a trap for pollinating insects, often hoverflies. As a fly makes its way through a tunnel-like escape hatch at the back of the slipper, it brushes against the bloom to deposit or pick up pollen bundles (pollinia). Thus helps ensure these insect visitors successfully aid in pollination!
