In the last 50 years, populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles have declined globally by two thirds and we've cut down 1/6th of the trees in the Amazon Rainforest during the same period. But this destruction of nature has caused the GDP to rise. The biggest reason we are in the current climate and biodiversity crisis is limitless economic growth. We need the world to adapt a new metric for growth, one that can be sustainable for all, people and planet. It is crystal clear that without civil disobedience, our leaders both political and private, do not have the courage or vision to affect the change required to bring carbon emissions down to safer levels and to protect the biodiversity that keeps us, and this planet, alive. For over 10 years, Member States of the United Nations have been negotiating a treaty that would enable the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. But not surprisingly, nothing has been concluded. Meanwhile, life in the oceans has entered a downhill trajectory toward mass extinction, an event that will surpass the Earth’s prior great extinctions. This needs to change now!
