Porosity is how your hair strand absorbs water & products & is determined by the cuticle or outside layer of your hair strand. It helps determine what techniques & products are most effective in helping retaining moisture in your hair.
Low porosity has a hard time absorbing anything. If you think of shingles on a roof, these shingles are very tight together with barely any openings or lift at all.
Low Porosity Tip✨
Use warm water & and or steam to help your hair absorb more moisture & product. The temperature change helps shift the pH balance of your hair in turn making the outside cuticle layer slightly more open to be able to accept & absorb water & product.
With high porosity, the hair strands absorbs & releases water & product easily. Those shingles are lifted up letting things in, but also out easily.
High Porosity Tip✨
Layer in creamy leave in’s & curl or styling creams, giving your hair more weight & adding more product giving your hair strand a chance to absorb & hold onto those products better.
How do you know your porosity?
The only real way to truly test your hairs porosity is under a microscope, but we can asses based on your hairs qualities.
If your hair repels water, or takes some time to absorb water & look wet, your hair is more than likely low porosity (like my guest in this video)
If your hair wets down easy but dried really fast as well, your hair is probably high porosity.
Hope this helps! 🌻
