“I want a job that’s not really a job. Something that I LOVE to do. And I know, deep down inside, that it’s the right path for me. I just wanna dance.” -Billy Griffin, from the 2002 production of “An Evening With Billy Griffin” at The Donald Oat Theater in Norwich CT (Yes, this happened. See last video.) Yesterday we closed “As You Like It” at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. There are not enough social media posts in the world to express just how much this experience has meant to me as both an artist and human, so I’m going to make a feeble attempt with two photo dumps. This first being all about me 💁🏼‍♂️ and one soon to follow devoted to all the beautiful people I got to collaborate and grow with this summer. 1. 5 years ago I was an associate to @sonyatayeh on the 2017 production. For the 2022 production I got to lead the choreography team, re-staging Sonya’s original work while also getting to add my own. 📸 @alblackstonechoreo 2. The first time I’ve ever had my name on a subway ad. 📸 @apuette 3. The first time I’ve had my picture taken by THEE legendary @joanmarcus . It may be my backside, but it still counts! 4. The first time I’ve worked on a show where there was a big enough budget that I could have two associates. More on these magical beings later. 5./6./7. The first time seeing my name in the New York Times, AND in a front page of the Arts Section NYTimes Critic’s Pick review, nonetheless. 8. The first time owning one of those sun hats that make you feel like a camp counselor/you’re about to visit Jurassic Park. 9. Billy in 2002, who just wanted to belong, would be so proud of Billy in 2022. If you’ve made it this far, I’ll leave you with a bit of advice I’ve learned along the way. In order to truly appreciate the so-called “highs” in life, you have to make friends with the so-called “lows”. One doesn’t exist without the other. Success and failure are just two sides of the same coin. And you never know when that coin is gonna be flipped. This is all to say, show up for your life in all its messiness and beauty. And that dream you had when you were a junior in high school-if you really want it to come true, it will. ❤️
