I remember trying to “find my voice” and “my style” with photography. “Find it”, like it was something external that I needed to acquire. I remember sifting through “styles” like a catalogue. Ticking the box I liked best and using that keyword to describe my work. It took me years to realize that I could make my own box. I would switch presets and lenses and exposure preferences, all in an attempt to “find my voice and style”. There was a moment when it finally occurred to me that my voice is me. It’s every moment I’ve lived and every piece of art I’ve consumed. It’s the goosebumps on my skin and the lumps in my throat, the passion and sadness, the parts of me that I show the world and the other parts I keep locked away. Your voice is what you’re trying to say, your style is how you visually share that with the world. The greatest challenge is ignoring the constant external stimulation of likes and follows and posts and reels while simultaneously looking inward and reacquainting yourself with....yourself.
