Tobe Hooper's INVADERS FROM MARS (1985) was as difficult a project as I had experienced 5 years into my career. Stan Winston hired me, having been recommended to him by James Cameron so I had that going for me. The build was concurrent to the L.A. part of the ALIENS build, and when Stan packed up and went to London with his 4 core artists, that left me to manage the on set aspect of the creature effects. Stan had designed amazing and fun Drone characters that taxed the limits of the in-suit performers - big dudes walking backwards wearing a little person strapped to their backs operating the jaw movement and vestigial 'ear arms'. It was crazy. But it was also the '80's and innovation was the name of the game. For Stan it was always 'go big or go home'. Though the stresses of this job were unlike anything I'd experienced (my hair was falling out! Thank god I have follicular regeneritis that baffles modern medicine. Or maybe my doctor thinks I'm making it up. Not sure about that.) The point is Stan gave me an opportunity to sink or swim on this bizarre gem of a film, and then afterwards jet off to London to join him on the set of ALIENS.
