Laser assisted drug delivery is an important component of the successful treatment of hypertrophic scars. Treatment begins with a pulsed dye laser to decrease the redness of the scar. This is followed by ablative erbium fractional resurfacing to drill holes into the scar. The purpose of these holes is two-fold. First, to help remodel the scar; second, to facilitate topical steroid penetration and perfusion into the thickened scar to help thin it.
