Back in December, I ran into @polonolaphotography, Selwhyn Sthaddeus Terrell, outside of @neworleansmuseumofart. He had a familiar look on his face, joy. Museums often plan exhibitions months and even years in advance.
And I knew his solo show was in the works. Before it’s announced, only a few people know. So for a while, as an artist with a major show, at a major museum, you have varied emotions: excited and also anxious to share your work. It’s exhilarating. And Polo’s face epitomized those emotions. I feels awesome.
I felt it when I showed a body of work in a group show at @nomaphotographs in 2018, Changing Course. And to join the ranks of artists like @gordonparksfoundation, Ansel Adams, and Lee Friedlander, who have also exhibited at your hometown museum makes it even more gratifying.
Polo, thanks for your unwavering commitment to telling these important stories of New Orleans, and beyond. Stories from the Black community that were/are too often overlooked.
Your work won’t allow that. It was special to have my son document the documenter. Picture Man: Portraits by Polo SilkJuly 16th, 2022 - January 8th, 2023 at @neworleansmuseumofart. Photos by #Lkasimuharris and Grayson Harris, 2021.
