This piece starts with bamboo, then gets all mythological. David tells the tale about how the bamboo plant’s purply-brown shoots grow 1.5 inches per hour as these multi-layered little phalluses. He equates it to love, desire, and a little violence. (Bamboo torture, anyone?) Things grow out of control quickly.
“Initially the painting was solely paying attention to the flesh-skin qualities of the sprouts,” explains the artist, "and then, progressively, the tips of each layer began to develop sharper tips that ultimately became particularly elongated, defining the nature of the piece and embodying Poseidon’s mythological tool/weapon.”
Pink, poke-y bamboo Poseidon. Because really, wouldn’t the water deity also hang out at Playa Blanca?
