In 2016 I took a prosecutorial oath to ensure that justice prevails. I soon realized that the “system” wasn’t always fair for people who look like me. Oftentimes, I found myself tasked with incarcerating individuals who should have been treated, not jailed. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a staggering 37% of the prison population in the U.S. suffer from a mental health diagnosis. I saw many minorities not get the treatment that they desperately needed. In honor of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, I am spotlighting this issue that is typically ignored or hushed. As a member of the mental health community, it is crucial that minorities receive fair and accurate treatment and services. Including those in the criminal justice system - that is what true justice looks like.👩🏽⚖️
