Gertrude lives in an area of Alerek, Karamoja, Uganda, where formal land titles are uncommon, leaving people at risk of encroaching and land grabbing that contribute to chronic violence and instability. Her own family land, where she grows food for her children, was even unfairly parceled off until recently, causing tension with her neighbors and hindering her ability to provide food and income. Our peace-building work in the region includes supporting formal land titling by educating people about the importance of titles and strengthening local and government systems to better support the process. After learning about land titling, Gertrude completed the application process and regained all her land, where she now grows sesame, pigeon peas and groundnuts to support her family. She says she feels much more secure and confident now that she is the documented legal owner of the plot.
