In recent years, I've noticed an unfortunate trend. At least five of my girlfriends have encountered some form of fibroid complications. The journalist in me decided to do a little digging and I discovered that fibroid complications are more prevalent in Black women. According to the Black Women's Health Imperative, Black women are 2-3 times more likely to have fibroids, to develop them at younger ages, to have bigger fibroids, and to have more symptoms. The rate of hospitalization for Black women with fibroids is three times higher than for white women.
Researchers have stated that the reason for the disparities are unclear. In communities of color, we have historically witnessed that we are not represented in the research.
I am grateful to partner with the @nihgov @allofusresearch because they understand that underrepresentation can no longer continue and are helping to ensure that we are included in health research.
