New work: Silver Cloud I, 2022, Gelatin silver print, 10 × 10 inches (25.40 × 25.40 cm) I took this new series of self portraits at locations designed by the acclaimed Paul R Williams. This is the Roberts House Ranch, a home designed by Williams in the hills overlooking Malibu that burned down in a 1982 wildfire. Williams was a Black architect designing sites of opulence and leisure throughout the height of US segregation. High key contrast high key haunting a landscape. The underpinning idea or feel of the work is about tuning into dreams around ease, rest, luxury and abundance, and the context of those dreams being launched in moments of heightened violence towards Black trans life and heightened systemic violence around Black communities. Dreams that created freedom places like Seneca Village. Dreaming that got people through another day. How can we tune to those dreams even in the midst of the mess of a thing we’re living with? How do we tune to the presence of something else? How do we line up with our desire and move in the direction of it as what we don’t want continues to dust 2 dust around us.
