Coming to Acampamento Terra Livre (ATL) - Free Land Camp - in Brasilia has been one of the most powerful experiences I have had. To encounter such warmth, kindness and love from diverse Indigenous Peoples from all over Brazil has been incredible. Over 8000 people have come together to share and participate in this beautiful celebration of Indigenous culture; music, dance, craft, ritual. And protest. It’s heartbreaking that they should find themselves living in extreme danger and fighting the government for their lands and basic human rights when they are protecting our remaining biodiversity through their age old understanding of how to live in harmony with nature at a time of climate crisis, which has not been of their making. The strength and leadership of Indigenous women is one of the things that I will carry with me. Their determination, resilience, agile mobilisation and deep courage is extraordinary. It was moving to see Women leaders from diverse Indigenous communities share their stories and struggles and be honoured on stage.
