This truism finds expression in the old screenwriting trick, in which a writer thrusts his protagonist into alien surroundings and thereby fashions a direct confrontation between the man and the world. Here, our hero finds himself in such a situation. Lately dropped in a foreign place, owing to some work commitment or other, he is, in a word, in search of his bearings. But a gentleman never lets his deportment suffer at the hands of his discomfiture. He stands erect, outwardly unruffled despite his bemusement, and blithely scours the landscape for a sign of sanctuary, where he might put up his feet and regain his composure in a less taxing sphere. Finally, a portent. Unlettered, yet promising. Our hero investigates. Fancy it, a bookshop! An English bookshop, no less.
