The popular ‘Alice’ by Amedeo Modigliani recently went through our scanner and the results confirmed our presumption. We found Ultramarine pigment in the dress and in some areas of the background.
‘Ultramarine pigment?’ you may wonder... Well, there was a time in history when Ultramarine was the most expensive pigment ever created, more pricey even than its weight in gold! It’s a deep blue color pigment originally made by grinding ‘lapis lazuli’ (a metamorphic rock) into a powder. Nowadays, we have a synthetic version of the pigment too, and this is most likely what Modigliani used.
Bonus info: If you drop by the current Matisse exhibition you will find the same pigment in the sky of Matisse’s ‘Le Luxe ll’ (1907-1908).
