Here are two upcoming festivals to make sure you have on your calendar!
This weekend we're heading to the @wellreadblackgirl festival, an intentional gathering devoted to storytelling and restoration taking place October 28-29 in Washington, DC. At this year's fest we will be presenting a curated selection of short films related to the conference theme of “Homecoming: Rest is Resistance." It will feature films by Black femme filmmakers that highlight memory, childhood, rupture, and the enduring qualities of our love and aliveness. We will also be tabling all day on Saturday, stop by our booth to say hi and pick up a copy of @seen_journal.
While the in-person component of the fest including our shorts screening is sold out, you can buy tickets to the virtual livestream and attend from home! Learn more and get your pay-what-you-can virtual tickets at wellreadblackgirl.org.
Then next month is the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, taking place November 3-13 in Philadelphia. The festival will include a screening of WISDOM GONE WILD. The documentary, “an immersive meditation on elder consciousness and the act of caregiving a parent with dementia," made its world premiere at BlackStar Film Festival this past summer and won our Best Feature Documentary audience award! Other highlights at @phillyaaff include an in-person screening of MISSISSIPPI MASALA directed by BlackStar's 2022 Luminary Award winner Mira Nair and a virtual screening of the thriller TEINE SĀ – THE ANCIENT ONES, which made it North American premiere at #BSFF22.
We're excited to serve as a community partner for the festival, check out the full film line-up and get your tickets at paaff.org.
