a d ~ Following on from @Dove‘s 2021 campaign, their new research has shown that 42% of Black and mixed heritage women with afro and textured hair have experienced hair based discrimination at school. They also discovered that race based hair discrimination starts as early as 5 years old, but the effects can let a lifetime. I haven’t always been Afro Glory... growing up I was quite the opposite. I longed for the swishy hair of the white women in hair ads. As an adult I now know what I needed was better representation and to be protected from hair discrimination. It brings me immeasurable joy to be the change I needed to see growing up and seeing brands like @dove creating authentic campaigns that platform Black voices exactly like this one! As you can see from my childhood in this reel, I was not missed by this but I have been blessed enough to undo the negative mentality surrounding afro and textured hair fed to me by society all these years! Help put an end to race-based hair discrimination by visiting DOVE.COM where you can sign a petition created by #EmmaDabiri & #ZinaAlfa to make hair discrimination ILLEGAL under the UK Equality Act. That would mean no more policing of young Black folks’ hair and so much more for their mental health. You can also download Dove’s My Hair, My Crown toolkit to help boost hair confidence in kids with afro and textured hair. Will you sign it with me and help end race based hair discrimination!? #DovePartner
