Marching on Congress in Brasilia alongside Hitsi Geraldo Kuikuro and other members of the Xingu Indigenous community. The Xingu is comprised of 16 different ethnicities in the Mato Grosso - a huge state that borders Amazonia and Rondônia amongst others, with different languages and ways of expressing their cultural identity. The Xingu are at heightened risk due to the legislation that has been tabled, which would permit mining for potash, a mineral that is often used as fertiliser. Brazil relies on imports for 85 percent of the fertiliser used for its grain crops and a quarter of the country’s demand for potash has usually been met by Russia, which has now stopped its exports. Brazil has large reserves of potash underground in and around the Amazon but researchers have said that Bolsonaro is falsely using the Ukraine crisis to advance the mining bill because most of the country’s proven potash reserves are not located under Indigenous reservations.
