In 1978, writer Glenn O’Brien got the idea of starting a public access show, which he called TV Party. It eventually became a televised gathering of downtown New York’s most colorful and celebrated art world personalities including Jean-Michel Basquiat (who appeared on the show several times). Other guests included David Byrne, Steven Meisel, Iggy Pop, Robert Mapplethorpe, Klaus Nomi, and the B-52’s among others. In an article he wrote for Vice, O’Brien shares, “It all looks glamorous now, but that’s because even with HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, CNN, ESPN, AMC, Comedy Central, and hundreds more, television is still monitored and censored by higher powers. And even though we sort of invented reality TV, if anything, TV is less real than ever. So is reality.” Ph. Bobby Grossman
