Though best known for his independent films Watermelon Man (1970) and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971,) he was also a friend of WBGO. In the 1980's he was the voice of a four part, one-hour program-an overview of the blues-produced by Karen Jefferson and executive producer, then program director, Wylie Rollins.
