It would be impossible not to notice @waltervanbeirendonckofficial's Sleeping Beauty, dressed in his Autumn-Winter 1999-00 collection, inside 'MIRROR MIRROR - Fashion & the Psyche'. But did you know this life-size doll is actually breathing (and, mind you, even snoring)? In his 1919 essay 'The Uncanny', Sigmund Freud describes how dolls and mannequins straddle the uncomfortable boundary between animate and inanimate objects. Van Beirendonck's Sleeping Beauty does just that: it makes us ponder what is real and what exists within our wildest imagination. Swipe to see how a custom-built mechanism brought to life this in-situ installation.
