We are saddened to learn of the death of Pierre Soulages, a French artist known for his dedication to the color black. The Buffalo AKG has five works by the artist in the collection, including "3 Avril 1954," 1954. Of his practice, Soulages said, "I work guided by an inner impulse, a longing for certain forms, colors, materials, and it is not until they are on the canvas that they tell me what I want. It is what I do that teaches me what I am seeking."* . [Pierre Soulages (French, 1919–2022). "3 Avril 1954," 1954. Oil on canvas, 76 3/4 x 51 1/4 inches (195 x 130.2 cm).
