Kentucky Dam is the last of nine dams on the Tennessee River - just 22 miles before the river empties into the Ohio River near Paducah, KY. Construction started in 1938, and it first generated power in 1945 and opened the Tennessee River to year-round navigation, linking the region with the nation's Inland Waterway System. Today, Kentucky Dam's navigation lock is one of the busiest, with thousands of barges carrying over 30 million tons of goods every year. In fact, a new larger lock is under construction to help alleviate congestion.
