The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Romalea microptera) is a Brookgreen summertime staple! They are prevalent in the Gardens this time of year, but not to fear, they are gentle giants! Kaela, our Plant Collections Coordinator, will teach us about how they interact in the Gardens and a few more fun facts! -“Lubber” comes from old English meaning lazy or clumsy -Have wings but are flightless -Harmless to us, but poisonous to predators (lizards/birds) -Prefers peas, lettuce, kale, citrus trees, and plants in the amaryllis family (Amaryllis, Crinum, Agapanthus, Daffodils, etc.) -May “hiss” if very scared #botanicalgarden #naturelovers #grasshoppers #lubbergrasshopper #nature #Brookgreenbloomsandbeyond #bugs #bugslife #fyp
