Since Oct 2021, when we brought together three hundred community members to rally against the construction of four luxury towers in Two Bridges, we have:
🌷Submitted an Environmental Assessment Study of the TBCP
🌷Formed intergenerational, multilingual CTU OC to build neighborhood power
🌷Conducted outreach to community members
If you don’t know who Joe Chetrit is, he’s a scumbag megadeveloper who’s wreaked havoc everywhere from Red Hook to Miami with huge development projects that put workers and residents in fatal danger. Wherever Chetrit goes, death and displacement follow.
Chetrit has now come to Two Bridges and Chinatown to exploit our neighborhoods for profit. He’s hungry to start building before the luxury tax break 421A expires in June, despite the fact that this land is part of a high risk flood zone and has not been cleared of toxic waste. What would happen to the families nearby if a flood came and delivered the toxic waste from the construction site to their homes? Who would be held responsible then? We know how this painful story ends - it’s a tale as old as time: working-class people suffer all of the harmful consequences that Chetrit ignores in his pursuit of profit, and he’s not fazed as long as he’s cashing his check at the end.
This week, Chetrit moved an excavator and barricades into place. Chetrit is looking to break ground in Two Bridges, before getting his building permits approved by the Department of Buildings - a tactic he has successfully used before. He doesn’t think anything can stop him.
So how do we #StoptheTowers, and #SaveOurHomes? Right now, we’re calling on the Dept. of Buildings to stop Chetrit’s construction. It’s disgusting that Chetrit is plowing ahead, knowing that construction may come at the cost of the worker’s safety.
At the same time, the Two Bridges Community Plan (TBCP) is in the final stage of the application process, before it goes through public hearings and elected representatives’ approval. It’s exciting because this means that our community rezoning plan can go into effect as early as September 2022, directly preventing the four megatowers from going up. (continued in comments)
