Just let that sink in for a moment. And don’t let it discourage you—if you’re even here, worrying about the impact you’ll leave on your kids, that’s proof enough you’re doing the thing. And they’ll see that. One thing about our parents’ generation is that they tried to hide and avoid everything. They were ashamed of the dysfunctional parts of themselves and instead of being transparent about working on those parts, they just accepted the dysfunction as a part of them and pretended it wasn’t a problem—which left many of us without healthy communication skills or emotional regulation. Or many of us were born with disorders that were misunderstood then (and still now), which meant we went without proper treatment and support our entire lives, along with feeling shame because we didn’t fit into society’s box.
