The history of Black filmmaking is vibrant and rich, yet relatively unknown to many. Recent documentaries have begun to shine a light on some of that history. Writer Jourdain Searles in @indiewire reflects on this ahead of the Netflix release of IS THAT BLACK ENOUGH FOR YOU?!?, @theelvismitchell's documentary about 1970s Black cinema and beyond. While exploring the landmark era, the film talks about Blaxploitation's films popularization of movie soundtracks, the rise of Black heroic figures, and some well-known and lesser-known films from that period – like THE LEARNING TREE (1969) and SUPER FLY (1972). As Searles mentions, it continues the conversation that other recent documentaries like HORROR NOIRE and SUMMER OF SOUL have contributed to. "There is no containing history within a running time. All nonfiction filmmakers can do is provide a framework for further study, both historical and emotional. What would it mean for more young Black artists to see their lineage onscreen, knowing that they are not the first and being delighted by that information?" writes @judysquirrels. What are your favorites works of Black cinema from past decades? Let us know in the comments. Mitchell's documentary will be available on Netflix this Friday, November 11. Read Searles’ full article at the link in our bio. #IsThatBlackEnoughForYou
