Thank you Tony Awards for awarding The Lehman Trilogy Best Scenic Design of a Play: A shift in the design process came when the director Sam Mendes and I visited the Park Avenue Armory: standing in that vast volume of enclosed New York air, the boardroom began to rotate, almost of its own accord, in both of our imaginations. Once the room was revolving, the show became a movie, a continuous reel. The mechanical music box that Henry Lehman describes when first arriving in New York had been set in motion. The set became the fourth dancer, as by now Ben Power and Sam had refined the expansive text and numerous characters into a succinct composition for virtuosic trio. The composer Nick Powell sat in every rehearsal, improvising the piano score as the actors worked through blocking: like a film score being written live. Candida, the pianist became the fifth member of cast, accompanying each performance from downstage left as if it were a silent movie.
