When we were asked if we could build a climbing wall on top of a sky scraper for a Got Milk ad, our immediate answer was “absolutely”. In the coming weeks got a quick reality check once we started piecing together the logistics. Most cities permitting offices and engineers look at us like we were insane.
Eventually we were reminded- With enough work, anything is possible. We landed on the Lightwell building in Kansas city as our hero location, and work began. The build crew design a wall large enough to climb, and safe enough to withstand the high winds found 30 stories off the ground. The first step was creating steel anchors in the roof of the building and then assembling a scaffolding frame from there. On our first site visit I almost shit myself looking over the edge of the building. After two weeks, the wall was complete.
Kai came in, and like most climbers was fairly comfortable with height involved with the production. Watching him and Jimmy run around the roof was terrifying, but the production team helped keep the whole crew safe. Soon enough, Kai was jumping from one hold to another while a drone orbited, and a 30 foot jib arm hung off the side of the building. We shot additional coverage from adjacent office buildings, and got a real kick out of all the employee’s watching the madness.
One hell of a shoot. Thanks to everyone who made this one a reality.
