In the fierce beauty of the Agafay desert, a ring of light and haze emerges from a well. It’s impossible to imagine its presence before it arrives - and impossible to conceive of its absence once it’s in place. The work draws on our reading of Paul Bowles’ searing 1949 novel The Sheltering Sky. Bowles reminds us to consider the precious finite within the seemingly infinite: “We think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.” Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky I read these words when I first traveled to Morocco and they have come to my mind each time I have seen a full moon ever since.
