Adding a little spice to my feed by doing a little story time! šŸ“– i figure i start sharing more of my ā€œbeginningsā€ 2022 marks ten years of ā€œdeciding to do musicā€ and it all started in college. I’d just graduated high school (and came off of an INCREDIBLE senior year, I’ll share in another storytime) but you’ll be surprised to know music was not something from the get I knew I’d want to do. In fact, I wanted to do something totally opposite. I developed a passion for two things: language (Japanese) and music. My mom worked in the airline industry, so studying Japanese to follow in her footsteps seemed like the best bet. However, that amazing senior year led to scholarships to study music. So I decided to do it and double major in Japanese. I had no idea I’d be attending a conservatory— meaning we’d study classical music and I’d sing opera. As someone who didn’t play in band, orchestra, or really grow up listening to it, it was a huge challenge. Year one I realized how behind I was; I didn’t have music theory experience so it made learning difficult. Year two curriculum started getting harder and i just started to feel like I was getting the hang of it. Positive note was I discovered I had perfect pitch šŸ˜† Year three was my BREAKING point. I really wanted to quit. ā€œwould I ever even use these skills?ā€ I remember contemplating switching majors but I was terrified that my parents would kill me #eldestkidproblems šŸ˜‚ in the end I wiped my tears dropped Japanese and pushed through. By year 4, I finally got the hang of it. I did my opera recital and got my diploma šŸ˜Ž I won’t lie— few years after graduating, I still questioned if my degree was worth it. It was not easy. And even telling ppl I was studying music at times made me uncomfortable. But ten yrs later I’m SO glad I freakin DID that. I sang opera, and had to learn how to in over 5 different languages!? when ppl compliment the skills I have I can’t help but be grateful for sticking it though ā¤ļøšŸ„²šŸ˜‚ Moral of the story: u won’t know unless you push through. Also don’t double major Japanese and music lol. The End ✨
