Since the Capitol riot two years ago today, it’s become common in the United States to draw a link between military service and extremism. The Department of Defense, which even before that moment acknowledged that it was an issue worth examining, said the attack was a “wake up” call. On this week's episode of @nytopinion's podcast “First Person,” the host @lulugnavarro talks to Kris Goldsmith, a veteran who joined the military after the Sept. 11 attacks with the mission of seeking revenge for the American lives lost, and a belief that terrorism was a problem overseas. But now — after witnessing the rise of extremism in the U.S. and almost becoming radicalized himself— Kris realizes that veterans are targets for far-right groups, and he now works to expose domestic extremists online. “Veterans are important because when they do something, people follow them,” he says.
