The NGV would like to acknowledge the passing of Uncle Jack Charles, a dearly loved and respected Boon Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Woiwurrung and Yorta Yorta Elder, activist, actor, musician and artist. Uncle Jack was a survivor of the Stolen Generations with an extraordinary creative spirit. Uncle Jack advocated for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people caught up in the prison system, and most recently was the recipient of this year’s National NAIDOC Elder of the year award, one of many tributes to his legacy. It was our privilege to work with him over many years and provide what he called 'a place of sanctuary.' Our thoughts are with family and the broader First Nations Community during this difficult time.
