I was super excited to visit the Maasai Ostrich Farm while in Kenya and was even more excited when they told me I could go behind the scenes AND take a real ostrich egg home with me! It wasn’t until I tried to do the right thing by notifying the airline of my plans to transport Oliver the Ostrich Egg in my suitcase that I realized I should’ve just kept quiet. The airline basically informed me that the transport letter meant nothing to them and me keeping my egg baby was entirely up to the airport. I had three airports to go through to get Oliver the Ostrich egg home (Nairobi, Paris, and finally Cancun) so I did what any determined egg parent would do: I wrapped the egg up, borrowed some pillows from my Airbnb for padding, and hoped for the best. Do you know how happy I was when I opened up my suitcase in the safety of my home and saw that my ostrich egg was still there?? Y’all, it was meant to be!! Who’s pulling up to my ostrich farm next year? Disclaimer: my TSA locks had been opened which means they saw the egg and transport letter and decided to let me keep it.
