Freeways was @dublab’s first album. Released December 6, 2001 on Emperor Norton Records, the compilation was curated by Carlos Niño and I and featured artists representing dublab’s nascent Los Angeles musical community. Freeways is a snapshot of a moment in time when diverse musicians began unifying under dublab’s banner, connected by a shared spirit of experimentation and wide open expression. This was the first released recording by Madlib under his Yesterdays New Quintet moniker and early utterances by so many other creative minds that are still part of the dublab family. It's wild to realize this was released 21 years ago. In many ways this was a lifetime ago but it also feels like a flash. So much has happened since 2001 but these songs still sound like they are reaching towards the future.
